About Dominio Basconcillos: Dominio Basconcillos, near Trevino in the Burgos sub-region of Ribera del Duero, was started by José Maria Basconcillos in 2000 with legendary Ribera winemaker, Tomas Postillon.
The whole bodega is modern, large and surrounded by its vineyards on the high plateau at 960m, crucial to allowing later ripening and higher glycerol content in the wines. Using sustainable and environmentally friendly methods and with more Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted than their neighbours, this is a top bodega with intentions to be a wine of reference in Ribera del Duero for the future. The Ribera del Duero DO stretches 115km from Valladolid and Peñafiel to Aranda in the east. The substrate is silty clay over limestone with poor alluvial deposits nearer the river and finer chalk at higher altitudes. It is on the chalky soils near Trevino that Basconcillos sits. Altitude is important: Basconcillos benefit from cooler temperatures and better diurnal variation. This is a high frost-risk area, costs are higher than the world average, and vintages are more variable than in Rioja. However, the intensity of flavours and density of these wines make them more age-worthy and certainly a counterpoint to their famous neighbour, while being ‘Spanish’ in their warmth and generosity, and world-class in quality.
Description: 85% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec. Aged 26 months in new French oak barrels, it is A ripe, full and rich wine with hints of elderberry on the nose. Warm and mouth-filling with good black fruits – black cherry, plums, liquorice – and silky tannins on the finish.
Nose: Pronounced, bold and concentrated nose. When you open the bottle, a blueberry and black cherry fragrance appears, with a touch of spicy, herbal and mineral notes.
Palate: Well-balanced and of an excellent vintage. Fresh acidity, flavours of black cherry and sweet vanilla, wrapped in polished and ripe tannins. It has a great potential for ageing over the next 10 – 15 years.
Pairing: It is the perfect companion for a good piece of stewed game (wild boar, deer), a roasted pig or grilled chops.
It is recommended to open it 30 minutes before serving at a temperature between 15 and 18ºC.
Alcohol: 15.5%
Awards: The prestigious American publication DECANTER, awarded the 2019 Reserve 95 points and a Gold Medal.
